Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on Saint André of Montreal

Posted on 31 October 2010 by GGS News

Canada,(PMO) 31 Oct 2010 :: Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the following statement today at a reception honouring the canonization of Saint André of Montreal:

“Your Eminence, Cardinal Turcotte, Archbishop of Montreal; Father Grou, Rector of St. Joseph’s Oratory; Your Honour, Mr Duchesne, Lieutenant Governor of Quebec; Premier Charest; Your Worship Mayor Tremblay; Mr Circé of Les Caisses Desjardins, and Mr Savoie of the Knights of Columbus, Ladies and gentlemen.

“First of all, I want to thank Your Eminence for inviting me to take part in this wonderful celebration today. I was truly impressed by the mass honouring Saint André of Montreal, attended by over 50,000 people, including thousands of young people, which would make many rock bands very jealous.

“Saint André Bessette would no doubt be a little uncomfortable with all this attention. But it is well deserved. This great Eucharistic celebration showcases Canadians’ attachment, here in Quebec and throughout the country, to this man of unshakeable faith who devoted his life to the sick and the homeless.

“Saint André from Montreal is revered, not only across our country, but around the world. Pilgrims travel thousands of kilometres to visit, what many would consider one of his biggest accomplishments, the erection of the magnificent St. Joseph’s Oratory, which I visited this morning.

“The lengthy construction of St. Joseph’s Oratory, one of the most visited sites in Canada, symbolizes Saint André’s devotion to St. Joseph, and is eloquent testimony to his unwavering determination. I note that in his youth, he had to leave his family to go earn his living in New England. But his destiny was to be quite different. After the birth of Confederation in 1867, he chose to come back home to Canada, to Quebec, here in Montreal. And that was when he decided to consecrate his life to God. His return to his home province marked the beginning of a long chapter in his life, which was to be forever engraved in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.

“Possessed of a simple faith in the power of God to do far more than men or women ask or imagine, Brother André has become an icon.

“Brother André was orphaned at the tender age of 12. He could barely read or write. But through his faith in God, he managed to accomplish great things. For some, his life is an example of how faith can move mountains. For others, he is a source of great inspiration. And for all of us, he is a great man, a great Quebecer, a great Canadian.

Dubai bomb was flown on passenger planes

Posted on 31 October 2010 by GGS News

Dubai,(GGS NEWS) 31 Oct 2010 :: One of the two bombs posted from Yemen last week was transported on two passenger planes before being seized in Dubai, Qatar Airways says.

The device was carried on a Qatar Airbus A320 from Yemen’s capital Sanaa to Doha. There it was transferred onto another Qatar Airways aircraft to Dubai, where it was seized by police.

The bomb contained the explosive, PETN, which is difficult to detect using normal airport security screening.

A second device was found at East Midlands Airport in the UK. Both bombs were hidden inside printer toner cartridges.

Until now it had been thought that both devices had been transported using cargo planes.

The US freight firms, UPS and FedEx, had been used to post the devices, which were addressed to synagogues in the US city of Chicago.

The British authorities says the bomb seized in central England was believed to have been designed to go off in mid-air.

Qatar Airways was unable to confirm which type of passenger plane was used to fly the device on from Doha to Dubai, but said it would have been an A320, A321 or Boeing 777. The firm also runs one freight-only flight a week from Sanaa to Doha.

Qatar Airways can confirm that a recent courier consignment was carried aboard one of its aircraft from Sanaa to Dubai, via Doha International Airport,” said a statement on the airline’s website.

“The carrier stated that, as per Chicago Convention, it is not the responsibility of the country in which the cargo transits to x-ray or inspect the cargo. This responsibility belongs to the country from where the consignment originates.

“Furthermore, the explosives discovered were of a sophisticated nature whereby they could not be detected by x-ray screening or trained sniffer dogs. The explosives were only discovered after an intelligence tip off.”

US officials have said the Saudi-born bomb-maker, Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri, is the prime suspect for constructing the devices.

He is believed to be one of the leading figures in al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), a regional offshoot of the militant network, and the organiser of a suicide attack by his brother last year on the Saudi intelligence chief, Prince Mohammed Bin Nayif. The prince survived the attack, in which PETN was also used.

The US top anti-terrorism official, John Brennan, said officials also believed the same person had constructed the printer bombs and the underpants bomb used in the failed attempt to blow up an airliner over the US on Christmas Day last year. AQAP said it was behind the latter.

“I think that the indications are right now based on forensic analysis that the individual responsible for putting these devices together is the same,” he told ABC News.

“He’s a very dangerous individual – clearly somebody who has a fair amount of training and experience. We need to find him and bring him to justice as soon as we can.”

He also said the US and its allies could not assume that there were no other packages out there.

“So what we are trying to do right no is to work with our partners overseas to identify all packages that left Yemen recently, and to see whether or not there are any other suspicious packages out there that may contain these [Improvised Explosive Devices].”

“We need to make sure that we get to the bottom of this, and understand who is behind it and what else we may be facing.”

US officials were re-examining the unexplained crash of a UPS cargo plane in Dubai in September to see if anything could be learnt, he added.

However, the UAE later said investigators from its civil aviation authority had concluded that there was no “presence of acoustic evidence or any forensic signature supporting the detonation of an explosive device”.

RSS has betrayed Hindus: Hindu Mahasabha

Posted on 31 October 2010 by GGS News

Jalandhar,(GGS NEWS) 31 Oct 2010 ::  Accusing the RSS of “betraying” the Hindus, the All India Hindu Mahasabha Saturday alleged that the Sangh’s intention was to “capture” the Ram temple site at Ayodhya in order to “accumulate wealth”.

“The right to construct the Ram temple in Ayodhya rests with only the Mahasabha and the Nirmohi Akhara. The RSS has interfered into the issue with the aim of accumulating wealth,” national spokesperson of Hindu Mahasabha JB Kshatriya said here.

He said the present “plight” of the Hindu community in the country has been a creation of the Sangh.

“The RSS has just pretended to be well-wishers of Hindus. From the very beginning, it has been unfair to them and has betrayed them,” he charged.

Brazil to elect next President

Posted on 31 October 2010 by GGS News

Brasilia,(GGS NEWS) 31 Oct 2010 ::  President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil looked likely Sunday to welcome his former cabinet chief Dilma Rousseff as his elected successor after a runoff in which she was the unassailable favorite.

All surveys showed Rousseff, 62, with a dominating 14-point lead over opposition rival Jose Serra, the 68-year-old former state governor of Sao Paulo.

If her victory is confirmed, Rousseff will become Brazil’s first female president, taking charge of the biggest economy in Latin America as it enjoys a new era of prosperity built during Lula’s eight years in power.

The country’s 135 million voters were being called out to decide the race. Voting is compulsory.

In the first round, on October 3, Rousseff fell just short of the majority of ballots needed to avert the runoff, scoring 47 percent to Serra’s 33 percent.

Analysts said the second round was certain to result in a Rousseff win.

“Everything indicates that candidate Rousseff will be elected president,” said Guilherme Carvalhido, a political science professor at Veiga de Almeida University in Rio de Janeiro.

“The numbers by the polling institutes converge and there is also a consolidation of votes, and this has reduced the number of undecideds,” he said.

Rousseff and Serra wrapped up campaigning Saturday in Belo Horizonte, the main city in the southern state of Minas Gerais and the second biggest electoral college in the country.

Rousseff, who grew up in the city, told supporters: “I am going to work for a united Brazil, I am going to work for all Brazilians without exception.”

Serra, in a separate part of Belo Horizonte, told a crowd he was going to build upon the policies of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Lula’s predecessor who introduced the fiscal policies underpinning Brazil’s financial stability.

“We will not do the work of a man, a party or a single government,” he said.

Carvalhido said “the only possibly surprising factor in this election could be the number of abstentions.”

“The proportion was 18 percent in the first round and there is a risk it could be 25 percent of more in the second round,” he said.

That likelihood was compounded by the fact that many Brazilians were taking advantage of a long weekend extended into a public holiday next Tuesday.

A final televised debate between the two candidates late Friday failed to inject any new information or changes into the direction of the election.

Both Serra and Rousseff stepped back from the insults they had traded in earlier debates, and focused on economic and social issues without scoring any major points against the other.

Both are bureaucrats respected for their management skills, but lack the commanding charisma of Lula.

Serra won respect for his stint as a health minister during which he championed generic copies of HIV drugs for seropositive patients.

Rousseff, who owes her advantage in the election to support from hugely popular Lula, was a former guerrilla in the 1970s imprisoned and tortured for belonging to a violent underground group opposing the then-military dictatorship.

A dour yet determined woman, she softened her image ahead of the elections with a cosmetic makeover.

She told supporters she was “confident” of taking over from Lula when he steps down at the end of the year, having completed the maximum two consecutive terms permitted under the constitution.
