Tripura Congress chief’s brother held with arms

Tripura Congress chief’s brother held with arms

Posted on 30 January 2013 by GGS News

GGS NEWSAgartala,(GGS NEWS)  Jan 30 : Weeks before the crucial assembly elections in the country’s lone Left-ruled state of Tripura, the state Congress president’s elder brother was arrested for possessing arms.

Both the main opposition Congress and the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) have been organising protest rallies across the state, forcing security forces to deploy additional troopers in sensitive places.

Tripura Congress president Sudip Roy Barman’s elder brother and former chief minister Samir Ranjan Barman’s eldest son Sandip Roy Barman, along with two of his employees, was arrested Monday night with arms, ammunition, Bangladeshi currency and incriminating documents relating to militants.

The men were arrested from a brick kiln by the central para-military Assam Rifles.

The Assam Rifles later handed over the arrested people to police, who released Sandip Roy Barman and one of his employees subsequently.

The manager of the brick kiln, which is owned by Barman, was sent by a local court to 12 days’ custody.

The Congress, which immediately launched protest rallies across the state, termed the arrests a “conspiracy” by the ruling CPI-M.

The CPI-M said the incident proved that the Congress was planning to unleash violence before the elections, to gain electoral mileage.

The Left party criticised the police for releasing Barman hours after his arrest. It demanded a probe into the matter.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, addressing a gathering in northern Tripura Wednesday, asked: “Sandip Roy Barman might be a trader of bricks. But why are arms, militants’ ransom receipts and Bangladeshi currency kept in the office of the brick kiln?”

“The Congress has forged an electoral alliance with the INPT (Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura). The INPT is the political wing of underground extremists,” said Sarkar, also a CPI-M politiburo member.

The chief minister’s allegation was denied by both the Congress and INPT leaders.

Demanding the re-arrest of the Congress leader’s brother, the CPI-M in a letter to the Election Commission apprehended that like in the previous polls in Tripura, extremist outfits NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura) and ATTF (All Tripura Tiger Force) may resort to violence this time too, in favour of the Congress and the INPT alliance.

CPI-M state secretary Bijan Dhar in his letter to Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath demanded appropriate steps so that the police authorities do not bow to pressure to release the persons arrested with arms and incriminating papers.

Tripura, the country’s only Left-ruled state now, is set for polling Feb 14.

Two other northeastern states, Meghalaya and Nagaland, will go to the polls Feb 23.

Results of the elections to all three states’ assemblies (60-seat each) will be announced Feb 28.

UN chief presses for major boost in Syrian aid

Posted on 30 January 2013 by GGS News

KUWAIT CITY (GGS NEWS) 30 JAN : — The U.N. chief appealed Wednesday for a major boost in international relief aid for Syria and called for the fighting to end “in the name of humanity” even as more refugees poured into neighboring Jordan and its leader warned resources were strained to the limit.

The U.N.’s call for up to $1.5 billion in humanitarian assistance at an international conference in Kuwait reflects the deepening civilian crisis inside Syria and the civil war’s increasing spillover around the region.

Jordan’s economic council said the kingdom had spent more than $833 billion on aid for refugees — accounting for nearly half the estimated 700,000 people who have fled Syria — and that it was unable to sustain a financial burden that has so far siphoned off about 3 percent of its GDP.

Some U.N. officials say the refugee figures could approach 1 million later this year if the conflict in Syria does not ease.

Speaking at the U.N.-led gathering in Kuwait, Jordan’s King Abdullah II said sheltering and assisting the refugee wave is about the country’s “capacity and potenital.”

“We have reached the end of the line. We have exhausted our resources,” he said.

Last week, the king used the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to amplify his appeal for international help as “the weakest refugees are struggling now just to survive this year’s harsh winter” and more cross the Syria-Jordan border at up to 3,000 a day.

In his opening remarks, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon urged all sides “and particularly the Syrian government” to halt attacks in the 22-month-old civil war that the U.N. says has claimed more than 60,000 lives.

“In the name of humanity, stop the killing, stop the violence,” Ban told envoys from nearly 60 nations, including Russia and Iran, key allies of Assad’s regime.

Aid officials estimate that more than 2 million Syrians have been uprooted or are suffering inside the country as the civil war widens — including what peace envoy Lakhard Brahimi called “unprecedented levels of horror” in an address to the U.N. Security Council after at least 65 bodies were found Tuesday in a suspected execution-style killing near Aleppo.

Before the latest donors’ conference, Ban described the international humanitarian response to Syria as “very much limited” in comments to the official Kuwaiti News Agency.

But the meeting appeared to leverage more pledges. Kuwait’s ruler, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, promised $300 million in a move that could prompt other donations from Gulf Arab allies, which are major backers of Syrian rebel factions. On Tuesday, the European Union and the U.S. promised a total of nearly $400 million.

“The situation in Syria is catastrophic and getting worse by the day,” Ban told the gathering.

He listed a “cascading catalog of horrors” facing Syrians, including shortages of food and medicine and abuses such as “sexual violence and arbitrary arrests and detention.”

Half of public hospitals have been damaged, he added.

“The use of heavy weapons in residential areas has destroyed whole communities and neighborhoods,” Ban told delegates.

While international aid channels are open to refugee camps in places such Turkey and Jordan, there is far more limited capacity to organize relief efforts inside Syria because of the fighting and obstacles from Assad’s regime.

Paris-based Medecins Sans Frontieres said the U.N. and others need to open more routes for aid to reach rebel-held areas, which now receive only a “tiny share” of international humanitarian help.

“The current aid system is unable to address the worsening living conditions facing people who live inside Syria,” said a statement by the group’s president, Marie-Pierre Allie.

The escalating hardships in camps outside Syria also can be used by Assad’s government as potential fodder in its claims that rebels are responsible for the country’s collapse, said Fawaz Gerges, head of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics.

“The misery of the refugees, their suffering in neighboring countries, provide the ammunition for Assad, who is saying to them, ‘See, you have no one else but your country, so come home,'” Gerges said.

S Korea successfully launches space rocket

S Korea successfully launches space rocket

Posted on 30 January 2013 by GGS News

339981-south-korea-rocket-launchS Korea,(GGS NEWS) 30 JAN  : South Korea has launched a space rocket in its third attempt and the officials in Seoul have said that the liftoff was successful.

Seoul’s attempt was a bid to join the elite space club of 12 other countries, which have launched a rocket from its own soil.

Seoul’s Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 (KSLV-1,) locally known as Naro, blasted off around 16:00 local time (7am GMT) as scheduled. No problems have been encountered so far.

However, the exact details of the launch will be available in the coming hours.

“The launch of the rocket itself succeeded. Whether the entire mission of deploying the satellite into proper orbit was successful will be determined later in the day,” a space official told Yonhap news agency.

Ahead of the launch of the 170-tonne rocket, Roh Kyeong-won, the head of the space ministry’s strategic technology development bureau said, “The Launch Preparation Committee, which was convened from 11 this morning, has decided, after reviewing the status of Naro, weather conditions and conditions in space to go ahead with the launch at 4 PM.”

The officials have noted that weather did not pose a problem. The launch site is located 480 kms south of Seoul.

The rehearsal, which was conducted on the eve of the launch day, had gone smooth without any glitches. Two earlier liftoffs in 2009 and in 2010 ended in failure.

The third launch was originally scheduled to take place by the end of last year but it was delayed due to defective parts.

The Naro program has been jointly developed by South Korea and Russia which will come to an end later in 2013. The joint venture was initiated in 2002. Reports suggest Seoul has so far invested around $471 million (£299 million) in this space program during the last decade.

The first stage of the 108-foot-tall rocket was built in Russia while the upper stage was built in South Korea. South has sent around 10 satellites into space however all of them were launched from outside the country.

Seoul’s launch has also come at a time when tensions are running high in the Korean peninsula. South’s adversary North Korea has successfully launched a space satellite on 12 December prompting severe condemnation.

The US and South had dubbed Pyongyang’s launch was a disguise for its ballistic missile test.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

GGS NEWS : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said that the Government will be prompt in pursuing the recommendations of JS Verma Committee to amend the law to deal effectively with cases of sexual assault against women.

In a letter to Justice Verma, former Chief Justice of India, Singh thanked him and other two members of the Committee — Justice (retd) Leila Seth and former Solicitor General Gopal Subramanian — for completing within a short period of 30 days the work of the panel, set up in the wake of the December 16 Delhi sexual assault.

“That the Committee submitted its report within a short period of 30 days is testimony to your commitment and concern for the public good…

On behalf of our Government, I assure you that we will be prompt in pursuing the recommendations of the Committee,” the Prime Minister said in the letter.

Singh also thanked the Committee members for their “labour of love” in pursuing their job to recommend amendments to the law to deal effectively with cases of sexual assault of extreme nature against women.

The Verma Committee has recommended enhancing punishment to upto 20 years imprisonment for rape and murder and life term for gang rape but refrained from suggesting death penalty to the guilty.

In its 630-page report submitted to the Government on January 23, the Committee suggested various amendments to the criminal laws to provide for higher punishment to rapists, including those belonging to police and public servants.

New offences have been created and stiffer punishment has been suggested for those committing such offence that left the victim in a vegetative state.

The new offences include disrobing a woman, voyeurism, stalking and trafficking.

The present statute provides for punishment of imprisonment ranging from seven years to life for rapists. The panel was constituted in the wake of national outrage over the brutal sexual assault of a 23-yer-old Delhi student in a moving bus in south Delhi. The victim died in a Singapore hospital on December 29.

Nitish Kumar best PM candidate: JD(U) leader

Nitish Kumar best PM candidate: JD(U) leader

Posted on 30 January 2013 by GGS News

downloadAPatna,(GGS NEWS)  Jan 30, 2013 : Following some senior BJP leaders backing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate, a senior Janata Dal-United leader Wednesday made a strong pitch for Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the post.

“There are several names doing the rounds for the post of PM. But Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is best among them,” JD-U legislator from Chandi, Hari Kishore Singh told IANS by telephone.

“Going by the reputation and experience of governance with justice, Nitish Kumar ranks first among those in the race for the post,” added Singh, who is also vice chairman of the Bihar State Planning Board.

He said that without Nitish Kumar’s support, no party would be able to form a government at the centre.

Singh criticised Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yashwant Sinha for supporting Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The JD-U is the second-largest party in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Last year, Panchayati Raj and Rural Works Minister Bhim Singh had triggered a controversy when he asked the BJP to declare Nitish Kumar as the NDA’s prime ministerial nominee.

However, later the minister expressed his regret after Nitish Kumar aired his unhappiness over his remarks. Nitish Kumar has repeatedly said that he is not in race for the PM post.

French troops enter Kidal, last Mali rebel town

French troops enter Kidal, last Mali rebel town

Posted on 30 January 2013 by GGS News

GGS French,(GGS NEWS) 30 JAN : French troops have taken control of the airport in the northern Malian town of Kidal, the last rebel stronghold in the north, according to the French army and a local official.

Thierry Burkhard, the French armed forces spokesman, confirmed on Wednesday that French troops were in Kidal and had taken control of the airport.

“The operation is ongoing,” he said, declining to give further details.Separately, Haminy Belco Maiga, president of the regional assembly of Kidal, speaking to Reuters news agency, said: “They arrived late last night and they deployed in four planes and some helicopters.”

He said there were no immediate reports of resistance.

Kidal would be the last of northern Mali’s major towns to be retaken by French forces after they reached Gao and Timbuktu earlier this week in a campaign to drive al-Qaeda-linked fighters from Mali’s north.

France said the area had become a safe haven for fighters.

Kidal is the capital of a desert region with the same name that the fighters are believed to have retreated to during nearly three weeks of French air attacks and an advance by hundreds of ground troops.

Aid pledges

The French advance came a day after African leaders and international officials pledged hundreds of millions of dollars at a donor conference in Ethiopia to support military operations against rebels in Mali.Dioncounda Traore, Mali’s president, thanked the “entire international community” as nations offered cash or support at the meeting at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa on Tuesday.

About $600m has been pledged so far, including more than $120m from Japan and $96m from the US.

The conference comes a day after French-led forces seized Mali’s fabled city of Timbuktu as part of an offensive against fighters who have controlled northern Mali for about 10 months.

African leaders and officials, as well as representatives from the UN, EU and China, are taking part in the Addis Ababa conference.

“We all know the gravity of the crisis,” Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, AU commission chief, said.

“It is a situation that requires a swift and effective international response for it threatens Mali, the region, the continent and even beyond.”

The AU has promised to contribute $50m, but has estimated its force in Mali will cost $460m.

There is no clear figure for how much the Addis Ababa conference is aiming to raise, although diplomats have suggested some $700m will be needed for AFISMA and the Malian army, in addition to heavy humanitarian costs.

Alassane Ouattara, Ivory Coast president and chairman of 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), said there was an “urgent need to speed up the deployment” of regional troops.

A lack of cash and logistical resources has hampered the efforts of African troops to support Mali’s army.

So far, just 2,000 African troops have been deployed, with the bulk of the fighting borne by 2,500 French troops. France launched its offensive in Mali on January 11.

Pak women make inroads into industry

Pak women make inroads into industry

Posted on 30 January 2013 by GGS News

GGS Ludhiana,(GGS NEWS) 30 January 2013 : Gone are the days when women in Pakistan would clad themselves in a burqa. Against the notion of the conservative society, women from across the border have made their presence felt in every field today. Apart from running fashion houses, they are also entering non-conventional professions and successfully running construction, marble and pharmaceutical companies.

Qaisra Sheikh, president of the Central and North Punjab Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNPWCCI), is successfully managing a company that manufactures packaging machines and assembles power gensets.

Sharing her journey into the entrepreneurial world, Qaisra said her husband used to do a lot of research work and it was in 1997 that she thought of putting his research work in practical practice.

“In 2007, when there was an energy crisis in Pakistan, I started my company, “Pact Generators”. I thought instead of importing gensets, we should make them in our own country,” she said.

In 2004, she joined the CNPWCCI. “Our chamber believes in economic empowerment of women. All the members of our chamber are successfully running their own enterprises. We do not have any sleeping members, who are only in name the owners of units while actually these are run by their husbands,” she said.

Giving a striking example of women managing a slaughter house, she said one of the members of the chamber, Dr Azmat Safi is managing a slaughter house. “Even the employees working in her slaughter house are women. Dr Shela Zawed is running a pharmaceutical firm. Women in Pakistan are today running their construction companies and are exporting rice as well,” she adds.

Dr Shehla Javed Akram, who is the founder president of the chamber, is into fashion business. She says: “India is way ahead of us and we have learnt many things from this country. Trade between both the countries should flourish, which will prove beneficial for both the nations”.

“Our chamber regularly visits rural areas and ask people to be self-reliant. “Five women are chosen by the chamber and their skill is modernised so that they can become self-reliant,” she added.
