3rd ODI: India save face with consolation win over Bangladesh

Posted on 25 June 2015 by GGS News

Mirpur, 25 June : India restored some pride with a consolation 77-run win over Bangladesh in third and final ODI here today to prevent the spirited hosts from securing a famous 3-0 series whitewash. India, put in to bat, put up a competitive 317 for six courtesy under-fire captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (69 runs off 77 balls) and opener Shikhar Dhawan (75 off 73)). Suresh Raina put up an all-round effort, scoring 38 before ending with career best figures of three for 45. The home team flattered to deceive in the chase with its batsmen squandering promising starts, eventually ending at 240 all out to give India their first and only win of the short tour. Bangladesh were cruising in the first 10 overs despite losing the experienced Tamim Iqbal (5) early. Young Soumya Sarkar (40 off 34) showed once again he is a batsman to watch out for during his entertaining stay at the crease. The opener played shots all around the wicket in the company of Litton Das (34 off 50), smashing five fours and two sixes to send the crowd into a frenzy.  Like some of his teammates, Sarkar looked set for a big score until he mistimed a slower one off Dhawal Kulkarni, giving a simple catch to Ravichandran Ashwin at mid-on. However, the game was very much alive with Bangladesh reaching 65 for two in 10 overs. Das and Mushfiqur Rahim (24 off 30) got together and shared a 50-run stand before the two fell in quick succession, leaving their team at 118 for four in the 22nd over. And when premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan departed to make it 148 for five, Bangladesh’s hopes of another famous win over India were receding fast. However, Sabbir Rahman (43 off 38) and Nasir Hossain (32 off 30) were not to go down without a fight. The duo hammered 49 off 38 balls for the sixth wicket as the dew made batting easier in the second half of the game. India badly needed to wicket now and Stuart Binny, playing his first game of the series, provided the timely strike by finding the stumps of the dangerous Rahman, leaving Bangladesh at 197 for six in the 33rd over. The asking rate was not much of an issue for the hosts but they just kept on losing wickets at regular interval. Spinners Ashwin and Axar Patel were effective alongisde part timer Raina. Umesh Yadav, brought back into the side, was wayward again and ended up conceding 33 runs in four overs. Earlier, a collective batting effort and a late blitz from left-hander Suresh Raina ensured that India posted a challenging score of 317/6 against Bangladesh in the third One-Day International at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium here on Wednesday. Sent into bat, India relied on Dhoni’s 93-run stand for the fourth wicket with Ambati Rayudu (44) and Dhawan’s 75-run partnership for the second wicket with Virat Kohli at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. – Suresh Raina hit a 21-ball 38, with three fours and two sixes, giving the innings a much-needed thrust. Dhoni, who was criticised following the team’s first ODI series defeat to Bangladesh and for his own poor run of form, battled his way to 69 runs off 77 balls, hitting six boundaries and a six in the process. Dhawan, who found the fence 10 times facing 73 balls, laid the foundation and sporadically found the gaps. His innings was about immaculate timing, delicate touches and deft placement, especially through the off-side. To start with, the intent was there till Rohit Sharma (29), in a moment of indiscretion, threw away his wicket to Mustafizur’s away going delivery.  This was the third time in the series the batsman was castled by the young left-arm pacer, who has created a flutter with back-to-back five-wicket hauls in his maiden ODI series. With 13 wickets to his credit so far, Mustafizur equalled the world record for most number of scalps in a three-ODI series, Ryan Harris being the other bowler. A 39-run opening stand was followed by a 75-run stand for the second wicket, with Dhawan doing the bulk of scoring, courtesy some delectable drives through the off-side. Kohli (25), who once again failed to make it big after getting his eye in, gave away his wicket while going for a needless heave on the on-side. On this occasion, Kohli was done in by the slowness of the wily Shakib Al Hasan. Dhawan, on and off, kept the likes of Mustafizur, Rubel Hossain, Arafat Sunny at bay, sending them scurrying between mid-off and cover. But he too had a soft dismissal. The Delhi batsman failed to connect a long hop for the agile Nasir Hossain to complete a good catch at midwicket. It was then left to the pair of Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu to consolidate India’s innings, and the duo did that by picking up singles and twos besides hitting the occasional boundaries. Dhoni was calculative as well as adventurous. He was not scared of stepping down the ground to the spinners and was equally at ease handling the pacers. Rayudu was not left behind, comfortably rotating the strike even as his skipper produced the big hits. For Bangladesh, skipper Mashrafe Mortaza was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/76. Teen sensation Mustafizur Rahman finished with 2/57. Brief scores: India 317/6 in 50 overs (M S Dhoni 69; Shikhar Dhawan 75; Mashrafe Mortaza 3/76, Mustafizur Rahman 2/57). Bangladesh 240 all out 47 overs (Soumya Sarkar 40, Litton Das 34, Sabbir Rahman 43; Dhawal Kulkarni 2/34, R Ashwin 2/35). PTI

Lalit Modi row: Swaraj, Raje won’t resign; this is NDA, not UPA, says Rajnath Singh

Posted on 24 June 2015 by GGS News

New Delhi, 24 June : The government on Wednesday rejected Congress demand for resignation of Union ministers Sushma Swaraj and Smriti Irani over ‘Lalitgate’ and ‘fake degree’ controversies, saying “our ministers do not do all that their (UPA’s) ministers used to do”.
“Our ministers do not have to resign. This is not their (Congress’) government. This is NDA government,” Home Minister Rajnath Singh told reporters at the Cabinet briefing.
He was asked how will the Monsoon session run smoothly as the Congress has been demanding resignation of at least three BJP ministers over the controversies.Congress kept up its attack against the NDA dispensation, seeking the sacking of External Affairs Minister Swaraj from the Union Council of Ministers and resignation of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on the ‘Lalitgate’ issue. Besides, the party’s student wing NSUI today held a protest outside Shastri Bhavan seeking “immediate resignation” of HRD Minister Smriti Irani, accusing her of holding “fake” degrees. While the Home Minister was dismissive of the demand of resignations, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad reasoned that the NDA ministers “do not do all that” was being done by ministers in the UPA government. “Let me add, our ministers do not do all that their (UPA’s) ministers used to do,” Prasad said, in an obvious reference to scandals during UPA era involving then Union Ministers. The remarks by the two senior ministers came a day after BJP MP R K Singh had struck a discordant note over Swaraj and Raje allegedly extending help to former IPL boss Lalit Modi, saying “any help to a fugitive is legally and morally wrong”. Singh’s strong comments were the first public criticism by a ruling party MP against the help extended to Modi by Swaraj and Raje, an issue which has snowballed into a major political controversy for the Narendra Modi government even though BJP has defended both the leaders. Swaraj and Raje have been facing flak from the Opposition for helping Modi in procuring travel documents in the UK.

Setback for BJP as court agrees to hear plea on Smriti Irani’s educational qualification

Posted on 24 June 2015 by GGS News

New Delhi, 24 June : A Delhi court on Wednesday agreed to hear a complaint filed against HRD Minister Smriti Irani for allegedly submitting false details about her educational qualification in the affidavits filed before the Election Commission (EC) during two different elections.

“It is held that the present complaint case is filed under limitation (of time). Cognizance is taken. The matter be now fixed for pre-summoning evidence on August 28,” metropolitan magistrate Akash Jain said, PTI reports.

A freelance writer, Ahmer Khan, had lodged a complaint against the BJP leader for producing different educational information before the EC.

In the affidavit filed before the EC ahead of the April 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Irani had claimed she had completed her BA from Delhi University (School of Correspondence) in 1996. But, while contesting Rajya Sabha election from Gujarat in July 2011, Irani had mentioned that she had only completed B.Com Part-I from DU (School of Correspondence), according to Khan’s advocate KK Manan.

Even during last year’s general elections, she had claimed that her highest educational qualification was B Com Part-I.

“It is evident from the contents of the affidavits filed by Smriti Z Irani that at best only one of the depositions by her on oath in respect of her educational qualifications is correct,” the complaint said, Hindustan Times reports.

“The aforesaid facts and circumstances reveal commission of offences by accused under section 125A of Representation of People Act, 1951, besides any other offences that may attract other penal provisions as an outcome of an additional investigation,” the plea said.PTI

Lalitgate: Shiv Sena asks why is Modi govt not backing Rakesh Maria

Posted on 24 June 2015 by GGS News

Mumbai, 24 June : Shiv Sena has yet again trained guns at its ally Bharatiya Janata Party for its role in the controversy surrounding former Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi. Backing Mumbai Police Chief Rakesh Maria after his pictures with Modi appeared in reports, Sena attacked the government for making him a scapegoat.
“A condemnable attempt is being made to put the dynamic Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria in the dock. If an official is trapped without even looking into the probe, then it won’t bode well for the state,” Sena said in its editorial mouth piece Saamna. The editorial also says that Maria can’t be expected to handcuff Modi and drag him back to India because he doesn’t have the jurisdiction. In a scathing editorial, Sena also questioned that if the government has backed External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje after names cropped up in the Lalit Modi row, why is it not supporting Maria.
Maria has submitted a report to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis explaining the reason for his meeting with Lalit Modi in London in 2014. He has claimed that Modi’s lawyer had approached him citing threats to Lalit Modi’s life.
Maharashtra Police sources also claim that Maria had written to the anti-extortion cell soon after he returned from London. The Anti-extortion cell also inquired about the underworld threats allegedly received by Lalit Modi.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home Ranjit Patil had said that repeated requests from Lalit Modi cannot be an “excuse” to meet him and an inquiry will be conducted into what “compelled” Maria to meet Modi. “As far as what we know till now, on his repeated insistence, Maria met Lalit Modi in London. Now we will have to go through records and examine that what compelled Maria to meet him despite knowing there is so much criticism surrounding him. Insistence cannot be an excuse,” Patil said.

US NSA spied on French presidents Chirac, Sarkozy, Hollande: WikiLeaks

Posted on 24 June 2015 by GGS News

Paris, 24 June : French President Francois Hollande, ex-presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and Jacques Chirac, and French cabinet ministers were surveilled by the National Security Agency (NSA) of the US, WikiLeaks said on Wednesday in a press release.

WikiLeaks on Tuesday began publishing “Espionnage Elysee”, a collection of top secret intelligence reports and technical documents from NSA concerning targeting and signals intelligence intercepts of the communications of high-level officials from successive French governments over the last ten years.

“The documents also contain the ‘selectors’ from the target list, detailing the cell phone numbers of numerous officials in the Elysee up to and including the direct cell phone of the President,” the press release said.

According to WikiLeaks, the to-be-published documents are intelligence summaries of conversations between French government officials concerning some of the most pressing issues facing France and the international community, including a dispute between the French and the US governments over the US spying on France.

“The French people have a right to know that their elected government is subject to hostile surveillance from a supposed ally,” said WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, adding that “French readers can expect more timely and important revelations in the near future”.

This revelation of American’s spying against French leaders came not long after Germany opened an investigation to Americans tapping German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other German officials.

France is formally a close ally of the US, and plays a key role in a number of US-associated international institutions, including the Group of 7 (G7) and NATO.AFP

No shortage of urea in Punjab: Agriculture Minister

Posted on 24 June 2015 by GGS News

Chandigarh, 24 June : The Punjab government on Tuesday said there is no shortage of urea for the ongoing crop season, asking farmers not to be worried as the state has arranged adequate quantity of the fertiliser to meet their demands.

State agriculture minister Tota Singh reviewed the preparation of agricultural department and supply of urea in a video conference with central government agencies along with higher officials of the department, an official release said here.

During kharif season last year, fertiliser consumption was recorded at 7,97,000 MT but this year the state has received 10,23,939 MT of urea and an adequate stock has already been supplied to cooperative societies and private dealers across the state, Singh said.

He added that due to constant efforts made by the Agriculture Department, by making interventions at various levels with the Centre, the stocks have increased this year.

In case of DAP, the state has received 1,66,563 MT in 2015 against 1,42,000 MT in 2014.

He also said that the state government has been assured by the Centre that allocation of fertilisers for the current month would be supplied and further requirement would be made as per the state’s need during the remaining period of Kharif season.

He said farmers should neither pay heed to any kind of rumours nor stock up the fertiliser beyond requirement as adequate stock is available.

Syrian Kurdish fighters chase Islamic State from key base north of Raqa: NGO

Posted on 23 June 2015 by GGS News

BEIRUT,, 23 June :  – (AFP)  Syrian Kurdish fighters have chased Islamic State (IS) militants from a key base north of the group’s stronghold city of Raqqa.

The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) – with US-led air support – took complete control of the Liwa (Brigade) 93 base on Monday.

“They (IS) have been defeated,” YPG spokesman Redur Xelil told Reuters.

“IS lines of defence were pushed back to the gates of Raqqa,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

“The Kurds also entered the outskirts of the town of Ayn Issa, close to Brigade 93 … this town has basically fallen in the military sense with the capture of the base,” Abdel Rahman said.

“This means that the Islamic State keeps collapsing inside its own stronghold.”

The base was important due to its position overlooking strategic roads linking Raqqa to other IS outposts in the provinces of Aleppo to the west and Hasakah to the east.

IS militants had held the military base after capturing it from regime forces last summer.

The taking of the base is the second blow inflicted on IS fighters by the Kurds in a week after the capture of Tal Abyad, on Syria’s border with Turkey.

Tal Abyad was a key conduit for foreign fighters and supplies into IS-held territory in Syria and for exports of black market oil from IS-held fields.

Kurdish forces defended the Syrian town of Kobane against IS in a months-long battle, and have emerged as some of the most effective forces battling the group in the year since it declared a cross-border “caliphate” with neighbouring Iraq.

The Syrian Kurds see Iraqi Kurdistan as an example of their desired regional autonomy in Syria. However, they have said that they do not desire a state.

While there has been little direct conflict between Syrian Kurds and Assad forces throughout the ongoing civil war, the Kurds’ increasings strenghth has led to tension between them and the Syrian government.

In Qamishli – a city in the northeast that is split between Kurdish and government forces – Kurds last week siezed various government-held positions. The Kurdish fighters said Assad forces had instigated a clash.

“In general, (the Kurds) and us are friends,” Reuters quoted an anonymous Syrian government official as saying. “But there is no state of permanent harmony.”

Meanwhile, in the northern city of Allepo, at least 10 civilians were killed in a government barrel bomb attack on a mosque, the Observatory said.

At least two of those killed were children.

“The faithful were in the middle of the Maghrib (evening) prayers in a mosque in Aleppo’s rebel-held district of Ansari,” the Observatory said, adding that the attack also left some 20 people injured.

According to UN estimates, over 200,000 Syrians have been killed in the ongoing civil war. Nearly four million have fled the country and have been granted refugee status.
