Islamic State calls for attacks on German chancellery, Bonn airport

Posted on 31 March 2016 by GGS News

Berlin, 31 March : Islamic State posted pictures on the Internet calling on German Muslims to carry out Brussels-style attacks in Germany, singling out Chancellor Angela Merkel’s offices and the Cologne-Bonn airport as targets, the SITE intelligence group reported.

Western Europe is on high security alert after last week’s Islamic State suicide bombings in the Belgian capital that killed 32 people at its airport and in a metro station. On Wednesday, France said it was investigating a man on suspicion of planning an imminent act of “extreme violence”.

The Islamic State images and graphics, widely published by German media on Thursday, included slogans in German inciting Muslims to commit violence against the “enemy of Allah.”

Germany’s BKA federal police, who monitor suspected militants with German passports returning from stints fighting in Syria and Iraq, said it knew of the images but that their publication did not necessitate extra security measures.

“We are aware of this material and our experts are checking it,” a BKA spokeswoman said. “It is clear that Germany is the focus of international terrorism and that attacks could happen, but this material doesn’t change our security assessment.”

Federal police chief Holger Muench said after the March 22 attacks in Brussels that Islamic State appeared eager to carry out further “spectacular” attacks in Europe as it was suffering setbacks on battlefields in Iraq and Syria.

One of the disseminated Islamic State images features a militant in combat fatigues standing in a field and gazing at Cologne-Bonn airport with a caption reading: “What your brothers in Belgium were able to do, you can do too.”

Another shows the German chancellery building in Berlin on fire with an Islamic State fighter and a tank standing outside the structure. The headline reads: “Germany is a battlefield.”

Germany joined the U.S.-led air strike campaign against Islamic State in Syria last year, though limiting its role to reconnaissance and refueling missions, after the jihadist group killed 130 people in shooting and bombing attacks in Paris.

A third graphic featured a military jet, which German media identified as a Tornado used by the German air force, against the backdrop of a mountainous area juxtaposed with the bloodied faces of women and children – apparently meant to represent civilians who Islamic State says have been killed by air strikes on areas it controls.

The caption under this image says: “Will you continue to grieve or will you finally act?”

All five pictures circulated on social media on Wednesday bore the logo of Furat Media, an Islamic State affiliate, according to SITE.

German media also published an Islamic State video celebrating the attacks in Brussels that featured a three-second shot of Frankfurt Airport, apparently taken from German television news footage.

The BKA spokeswoman said police were aware of that video as well and current security measures were sufficient.

Earlier this year, Sunny made headlines due to her interview with journalist Bhupendra Chaubey. Posted on 31 March 2016 by GGS News

Dantewada, 31 March : 7 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men were killed in a landmine blast triggered by Maoists on Wednesday in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district.
The three-vehicle CRPF convoy was returning to its base camp after a search operation when it was ambushed by Maoists at around 3pm near the Basaras-Kuakonda axis in Melawada village. A mini truck carrying seven people in civilian clothes was blown up, followed by heavy firing, said deputy inspector general, CRPF, DP Upadhyay.
Their weapons were also stolen by the attackers before reinforcements arrived at the spot.
Special DG (Naxal operations) DM Awasthi confirmed that the seven jawans were killed instantly in the high-intensity explosion that created a 15-foot crater in the road.“All the dead security personnel belonged to the 230 battalion of the CRPF,” said Dantewada superintendent of police K Kashyap. Several others were injured in the blast and arrangements for them to be airlifted to Raipur and Jagdalpur were being made on Wednesday evening.
Chief minister Raman Singh condemned the attack.
Dantewada, 350 kilometres south of the state capital, is part of the mineral-rich Bastar region — a Maoist stronghold and the site of frequent clashes with security forces.
Maoists operate in at least 20 states but are most active in the forested areas of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.

ICC World Twenty20: 2nd semi-final, India vs West Indies – Preview

Posted on 31 March 2016 by GGS News

Mumbai, 31 March : Thirty three matches into the tournament, which started with seven Asian teams, hosts India are the only one from their continent still standing. They will take on West Indies in the much-awaited semifinal clash in Mumbai on Thursday (March 31). The Darren Sammy-led team has reached its third consecutive semifinals of World Twenty20 while this is India’s second appearance in as many editions.

On Thursday night it will be a showdown between two of the biggest crowd-pullers of modern cricket – Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli – at the Wankhede stadium, which has been a nightmare for the bowlers in the recent past. Below is a look at how both teams have fared en route to the World T20 2016 semifinal.India traditionally have been slow starters and their scoring rate in the first six overs underlines the fact. They are the only team to score below six in the first six overs in the Super Ten stage. India’s rate improves in the middle overs thanks mainly to Virat Kohli’s presence. In the 100 balls he has faced in the middle overs, he scored 109 runs. India’s overall run-rate of 6.90 is the second lowest for a team in the Super Ten, marginally above Bangladesh’s 6.83.

West Indies have also not been at their belligerent best with the bat as compared to the previous editions. Their dot ball percentage of 46.42% is the highest for a team and they are also poor in rotating the strike, with just 39.26 percent of their deliveries being singles, twos and threes – the lowest for a team in the Super Ten. But the biggest difference is in their scoring rate in the last five overs, which has dropped down to 8.04 from around ten from the previous editions.

Though on paper both teams have a stronger batting unit, their bowlers have outdone the batsmen in the tournament so far. India and West Indies’ overall economy rates are second and third-best respectively, below New Zealand’s 5.97. The economy rates of both teams in the first six overs are only bettered by Sri Lanka’s 6.13. The dot-ball percentages of the bowlers are the highest among teams in the Super Ten – 43.48% for India and 43.04% for West Indies.

PACE vs SPIN
Spinners have done well for both the teams. For India, spinners and pacers have taken 12 wickets each, but their spinners average 19.25 per wicket and concede 6.24 per over compared to 25.00 and 7.31 for the pacers. For West Indies fast bowlers have taken more wickets (15 to 10), but the overall numbers are better for spinners – average of 19.25 and economy of 6.24. Only 14.14% of the deliveries bowled by Indian spinners have yielded boundaries while the West Indian slow bowlers have been on the mark too, with only 16.19% of their deliveries resulting in boundaries. The spinners from these two teams areonly behind New Zealand’s 11.21% in the Super-10 stage.

VENUE
Among the seven venues for this World T20, Mumbai has the lowest dot-ball percentage – 32.30% – much lower than the tournament average of 40.05%. 23.13% of the deliveries bowled in Mumbai have resulted in boundaries, i.e. roughly one out of four balls. The next best is 15.57% for Dharamsala, but two matches there have been shortened games. Mumbai averages nearly 35 for every wicket and concedes over 10 an over in this tournament – both unfriendly from a bowler’s point of view. Spinners have done marginally better than pacers in the matches held in Mumbai.

TOSS
In the ten T20s played at Wankhede this year, eight have been won by the team batting second. Meanwhile, West Indies have chased in all the four matches they have played in this World T20 while India have batted second in all their games except against Bangladesh. The average score batting first at Wankhede in the matches played this year in 170. Except Vidharbha’s 105 against Kerala, all other totals have been in excess of 150.

PLAYERS
It is indeed a no-brainer as to who will be the biggest threat for West Indies from India’s batting camp. Virat Kohli was the leading run-scorer in the Super-10 stage with 184 runs in four outings. He scored about 37% of India’s runs and 110 more than the next best – MS Dhoni. Kohli has scored 536 runs in T20Is this year – the most by anyone in a calendar year, with six fifties in 11 innings. He has scored more than one-thirds of the total runs India have scored this year in the matches he has played.

Chris Gayle averages 28.75 in the 14 limited-overs internationals against India since 2008. He has batted only twice in this edition of World T20 – scoring 100 against England in Mumbai and 4 against South Africa in Nagpur. West Indies’ leading run-scorer of the tournament – Andre Fletcher – is out with an injury. Their lower middle order comprising Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell and Darren Sammy haven’t fired so far – in nine innings between them, they have scored 91 runs at a run-a-ball.

WHACKSTAT
Kohli has scored 184 runs so far in the tournament in four innings. His four compatriots in the top five – Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh – together have scored 181 runs.

Among the bowlers who have opened the bowling in T20Is since 2012, Samuel Badree has taken the most wickets for a spinner – 37. His economy rate of 5.40 is the best for anyone opening the bowling, with at least 20 overs bowled.

KABUL, 30 MARCH : A US Air Force F-16 fighter jet has crashed at the Bagram Air Base outside Kabul, Afghanistan, says the Pentagon.According to Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook, the incident took place on Tuesday while the plane was taking off.

He added that the pilot was able to eject before the crash and is currently under medical evaluation.

The crash site has been secured and the cause of the crash is under investigation, he noted.

The jet was part of the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing of the US Air Force.

F-16 fighter jets have been deployed in Afghanistan since the beginning of the US-led military in 2001. The US Air Force has maintained one squadron of F-16s at Bagram since the 2014 Washington’s partial military drawdown.

Afghanistan is gripped by insecurity for around 15 years after the United States and its allies attacked the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
