Donald Trump promises Americans ‘huge tax cut’ for Christmas

Posted on 21 November 2017 by GGS News

Washington : President Donald Trump on Tuesday promised a tax overhaul by Christmas, even as a nonpartisan tax analysis group said the Senate package would leave half of taxpayers facing higher levies by 2027.
Speaking before a Cabinet meeting, Trump said, “We’re going to give the American people a huge tax cut for Christmas — hopefully that will be a great, big, beautiful Christmas present.”
Trump spoke as the Tax Policy Centre said that while all income groups would see tax reductions, on average, under the Senate bill in 2019, 9 per cent of taxpayers would pay higher taxes that year than under current law.
By 2027, that proportion would grow to 50 per cent, largely because the legislation’s personal tax cuts expire in 2026, which Republicans did to curb budget deficits the bill would create.
The policy centre, a joint operation of the liberal- leaning Urban Institute and Brookings Institution, found that low-earners would generally get smaller tax breaks than higher-income people.
In 2019, those making less than USD 25,000 would get an average USD 50 tax reduction, or 0.3 per cent of their after- tax income. Middle-income earners would get average cuts of USD 850, while people making at least USD 746,000 would get average cuts of USD 34,000, or 2.2 per cent of income.
The centre also said the Senate proposal would generate enough economic growth to produce additional revenue of USD 169 billion over a decade. That’s far short of closing the near USD 1.5 trillion in red ink that Congress’ nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation has estimated the bill would produce over that period.

China delivers 1,000 tonnes of rice to Syria in food aid

Latakia : A total of 1,000 tonnes of rice donated by China has been delivered to Syria’s northwestern city of Latakia, the Chinese Embassy in Damascus said.
The donation was part of a larger supplies aid to be delivered to the war-torn country in batches in the near future, Xinhua news agency reported.
The statement issued on Monday by the Chinese Embassy in Damascus said the 1,000 tonnes of rice is part of 5,404 tonnes of rice China is pledging to deliver in the near future.
“China is working hand in hand with the Syrian side to secure the rice to be delivered to the Syrian people as soon as possible.” A delegation from the Chinese Embassy in Damascus on Monday visited the port of the coastal city of Latakia in northwestern Syria, where the first shipment arrived.
Latakia Governor Ibrahim Khudr Salem escorted the delegation to the port of Latakia, expressing gratitude for the Chinese food aid.
“Thanks for the aid donated by China and for the supportive stance of the Chinese government and people to the Syrian people in their confrontation of terrorism and the regional schemes to divide Syria,” Khudr said.
Chinese Ambassador to Syria, Qi Qianjin, said that Beijing aimed to help the Syrian people in the difficult time the country is passing through.
“We would like, through this food aid, to help the Syrian people in the difficult time of war and this food aid is a clear sign of the firm relations and friendship between the governments and peoples of China and Syria and we will continue to offer all humanitarian and economic help to the Syrian people.”
China has been supporting Syria in the humanitarian field since 2011. In May, China declared that it would provide food aid to the developing countries, as part of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The Belt and Road Initiative was proposed by China in 2013 with the aim of building a trade, investment and infrastructure network connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient trade routes.
Apart from the cooperation with the humanitarian organisations, China has also made direct donations in Syria.

Iranian president declares end of Islamic State

Posted on 21 November 2017 by GGS News

Beirut : Iranian President Hassan Rouhani declared the end of Islamic State on Tuesday in an address broadcast live on state TV.

A senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Major General Qassem Soleimani, also declared the end of Islamic State in a message sent to the country’s supreme leader Tuesday which was published on Sepah News, the news site of the Guards.
Videos and pictures of Soleimani, who commands the Quds Force, the branch of the Guards responsible for operations outside of Iran’s borders, at frontline positions in battles against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have been posted frequently by Iranian media in recent years.

Last week, Iranian media published pictures of Soleimani at Albu Kamal in eastern Syria, a town which Soleimani said Tuesday was the last territory retaken from Islamic State control in the region.

The Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s most powerful military force which also oversees an economic empire worth billions of dollars, has been fighting in support of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and the central government in Baghdad for several years.

More than a thousand members of the Guards, including senior commanders, have been killed in Syria and Iraq.

India’s nominee Bhandari re-elected to ICJ after UK pullout

India’s nominee Bhandari re-elected to ICJ after UK pullout

Posted on 21 November 2017 by GGS News

United Nations : Judge Dalveer Bhandari was re-elected to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Tuesday as the General Assembly rallied behind him in a show of strength that made Britain bow to the majority and withdraw its candidate Christopher Greenwood.

“I am grateful to all the nations who have supported me,” Bhandari told IANS in the Assembly chamber after the election. “It was a big election as you know.” The withdrawal of its candidate by Britain, which had the backing of its fellow permanent members, was a setback for the Security Council that had been locked in a test of wills with the Assembly.

A candidate has to win a majority in both the chambers. Bhandari won majorities in the Assembly in the first 11 rounds of voting over two meetings, while the Council blocked his election by giving majorities to Greenwood in the ten rounds of balloting it held.

“The British ultimately had to bow down to the will of the majority,” a diplomat said. “The Indians stared them down.” The Council’s permanent members have traditionally had a judge in the ICJ, assuming it to be a matter of right. This time the 193-member Assembly asserted itself, forcing the Council to back down and put at risk the continuation of the ICJ perk of the permanent members.

In letters written to the Presidents Miroslav Lajcak of the Assembly and Sebastiano Cardi of the Council, Britain’s Permanent Representative Matthew Rycroft said that his country was withdrawing Greenwood’s candidature keeping “in mind the close relationship that the United Kingdom and India always enjoyed and will continue to enjoy”.

Bhandari’s election was a dramatic face-saving turn of fortunes for India, as he lost the Asian seat on the ICJ to Lebanese lawyer-turned-diplomat Nawaf Salam, who had been campaigning for two years and had the backing of the powerful Organisation of Islamic Cooperation with 55 members in the UN.

Bhandari got a second chance only because an unpopular Britain could not get an Assembly majority for a remaining judgeship requiring a runoff where the two chambers of the UN split in their voting.

Bhandari’s cause became a rallying point for the nations not a member of the Council, who were chafing under the domination of the unrepresentative Council to make a popular show of force.

India hammered home the representative character of the Assembly compared to the Council and insisted that the UN members follow democratic principles and re-elect Bhandari by accepting the global majority he has received in the Assembly.

In the last round of voting on November 13, Bhandari received 121 votes, just short of a two-thirds majority in the 193-member Assembly, while Greenwood received nine in the Council.

“The precedent is clear,” India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin said at a reception for Bhandari attended by representatives of over 160 countries on Thursday.

“As is expected in the 21st century, the candidate who enjoys overwhelming support of the General Assembly membership can be the only legitimate candidate to go through.” Diplomats familiar with behind-the-scenes manoeuvres said Britain indicated late last week that it would withdraw Greenwood, but over the weekend changed course with the backing of some fellow permanent members and came up with a plan for the the Council to call for ending the balloting and set up a joint conference to resolve the deadlock.

The statutes of the ICJ provides for a joint conference made up of three members each from the Council and the Assembly to resolve a deadlock that persists after three election meetings.

India feared the outcome and campaigned resolutely to avoid it, pointing to the precedents in the elections in 2011 and 2014 and earlier when the candidate leading in the Council withdrew in favour of the candidate with the majority in the Assembly even though in those cases permanent members were not involved.

Bhandari’s election upsets what has become a traditional balance in the ICJ. Besides a permanent member going unrepresented, four Asian countries will be represented on the ICJ bench instead of the usual three.

Three incumbent judges of the ICJ — President Ronny Abraham of France, Vice President, Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf of Somalia, and Antonio Augusto Cancado Trindade of Brazil – were elected along with Salam in the first four rounds of voting on November 9.

Bhandari and the others elected will start their term in February next year.

WWE Survivor Series 2017 results: Team Raw wins the night after Triple H shenanigans

New Delhi : Triple H vs. Kurt Angle is an all-but-guaranteed future matchup as The Game secured the deciding pinfall over Shane McMahon at WWE Survivor Series 2017, but not before predictably Pedigreeing Angle. For better or worse, more and more members of the McMahon family are slowly creeping into top WWE storylines as WrestleMania season approaches. And though the ending left much to be desired with teases of possible involvement/heel-turns from Jason Jordan and Daniel Bryan, an exciting WWE Survivor Series signed off rather mildly.

Last Week’s WWE RawSurvivor Series Social Media Score:

The Shield vs. The New Day (YouTube Views: 373,000)

The New Day had some excellent dog bars in their pre-match promo. So much so, I was surprised when actual humans came out to represent The Shield.

This is literally The Shield’s second match as a unit since 2014 and The New Day is already teasing their breakup around WrestleMania season.

The sight of a five-man announce team felt like watching Triple H as a member of The Shield.

Roman Reigns didn’t have to wear one of those hideous half-and-half t-shirts, further establishing The 2017 Shield as  Reigns and his two buddies.

The Shield kind of comes off like Roman Reigns staying at a friend’s place while his mansion is being renovated. That mansion should be ready right around WrestleMania 34.

At this point, it’s beginning to feel like Survivor Series will be the one night a year where all the announcers get to make fun of Booker T.

Estimated percentage of fans who still boo Roman Reigns: 25%

Estimated percentage of Roman Reigns’ detractors who will skip WrestleMania if he is in the main event: 0%

Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown—Women’s Elimination Match (YouTube Views: 144,000)

In a surprising development in the prop bet department, there were no chants of “we want Ellsworth” or “we want Paige.”

It’s amazing how committed WWE remains to Bayley’s entrance considering how little she wins these days.

Corey Graves made it a point to note that Tamina and Nia were getting chippy because this is WWE and they’re minorities of the same ethnicity.

In a perfect world, Asuka would have run through all five members of Team SmackDown by herself.

Naomi’s gear, outside of her SmackDown Live t-shirt, had pretty much every color except blue.

WWE has done an admirable job with Asuka since her confusingly competitive feud with Emma.

The Miz vs. Baron Corbin (YouTube Views: 103,000)

The Miz and Baron Corbin made it very clear that they are both still heels. The Miz used outside interference while Baron Corbin just antagonized everything that moved.

With Maryse ringside, I was a tad worried Baron Corbin was on the verge of reprising Gene Snitsky’s gimmick.

Curtis Axel is the only man in WWE who can (kayfabe) break his neck with team spirit.

Baron Corbin is now the lineal heel champion of the world, and the championship for such a distinction should be Cena’s old spinner belt.

The Usos vs. The Bar (YouTube Views: 39,000

The Usos had some excellent “Bar” bars in their pre-match promo.

The Usos are the toughest guys to wear white, slim-fit joggers.

Sheamus missed several opportunities to poison The Usos with his porcupine tips.

The term “Super Kick Party” was used by Byron Saxton and if Vince McMahon paid any attention to ROH Saxton would be out of a job.

At 2-2 following this match, the best-of-seven format between Raw and SmackDown became much more fun.

Alexa Bliss vs. Charlotte (YouTube Views: 65,000)

Alexa Bliss was being booked like Kevin Sullivan, who was shorter than most wrestlers he faced but, as a wrestler, also booked WCW.

Alexa Bliss vs. Charlotte will be ten-times better a year from now when Charlotte is a heel and Alexa is a scrappy underdog.

Given all the offense Charlotte endured, this would have been a prime spot for a Money in the Bank cash-in from Carmella.

Brock Lesnar vs. AJ Styles (YouTube Views: 167,000)

Brock Lesnar gets over because he’s presented as someone who is “real,” as opposed to a person who is a “performer” or a “Superstar.” There has to be more room in that sub-genre for the Samoa Joes and Shinsuke Nakamuras of the world, right?

Brock Lesnar vs. wrestlers half his size is a terrain WWE should continue exploring to diversify his matches.

When Brock Lesnar suplexed AJ Styles and he sold it with a backflip, did that count as two suplexes?

Assuming AJ Styles is Rocky, the first half of Lesnar vs. Styles was booked like Rocky III. The second half of Lesnar vs. Styles was booked like Rocky III.

Lesnar’s string of wins after one F5 is the subject of growing complaints among single men in their 40s.

Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown—Men’s Elimination Match (YouTube Views: 109,000)

This is the first pay-per-view buildup in forever where John Cena was just another hand. Who can blame him for not wearing a blue t-shirt? He has blended into the background for a month now.

I could almost hear Vince McMahon instructing various wrestlers to tag in and out just stand there to gauge the crowd response for a potential “dream match.”

The Survivor Series commentary team was just a cutthroat band of five men who took turns correcting one another. They were all terrible in their own ways.

I’m willing to bet Vince McMahon had a stopwatch to time how fast Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn high-tailed it from Shane McMahon, and if they were a second too slow they’d be on a plane back to Europe.

A major subplot of Raw vs. SmackDown was: “Triple H and Kurt Angle is going to happen at WrestleMania…you guys are cool with this, right?”

WrestleMania season is nigh and the McMahons are here to stay—until May. Deal with it. You know you will.

Daniel Bryan and Jason Jordan both appeared on camera at Survivor Series, but only to tease potential heel-turns that didn’t happen. Not that I’m bitter because I had two articles prepared just in case.

Ludhiana factory collapse: Death toll rises to 10, rescue teams continue search for missing

Posted on 21 November 2017 by GGS News

Ludhiana : (Amritpal Singh Sidhu)  The death toll in the building collapse of a plastic factory in Ludhiana, in Punjab, has risen to 11, an official said here on Tuesday.
The five-storey building, located in a congested part of the Industrial Area near Cheema Chowk, had collapsed on Monday afternoon following a powerful blast triggered by a major fire in the building earlier.
The official said 20-25 people, including officials of the fire department and municipal corporation, were feared trapped inside the building after it collapsed.

The official said 11 bodies had been recovered from the debris of the building and rescue operations continued through the night (Monday-Tuesday).
While three bodies were recovered on Monday evening, more bodies were recovered in the night.
“The rescue operation will continue today (Tuesday). There are some people still trapped inside,: a senior district officer told media.
Teams of the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), Army, Punjab Police, Fire Department and a local NGO were engaged in rescuing those trapped.
Two people, who were pulled out of the debris alive, were admitted to a hospital.
Police Commissioner RN Dhoke said the trapped officials had gone inside the building for inspection after it caught fire on Monday morning.

Chemicals and plastic material stored in Amarson Polymers stoked the fire, he said.
At least 15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot which finally brought the fire under control after nearly six hours on Monday.
People living nearby were asked to vacate the area as a precautionary measure.
Officials said a few other buildings and houses in the vicinity of the collapsed building were also damaged.
The factory was located in an industrial-cum-residential area of Ludhiana.
